Union County High School

Biology I Syllabus

Instructor: Mrs. Aileen Beeler

Planning: 3rd Block (12:12 – 1:37)

Email: beelera@ucps.org

Phone: 992-5724

Course Description: Biology includes laboratory techniques, lab safety, characteristics of living things, ecology, evolution, genetics, cells, and cell processes.

Course Goal: To develop an understanding of the relevance of biology as it relates to standards of living, career choices, and current issues in science and technology.

Grading:

Grading will follow the policy of the Union County School District:

A=93-100

B=85-92

C=75-84

D=70-74

F=below 70

Evaluations:

Tests: A student will have chapter tests for 100 points. These tests will cover any material that was discussed in the prior week. The tests will be derived from homework and in-class discussions. Also, formative tests will be given every 4 ½ weeks based on material studied during that time period.

Homework/Assignments/Projects: Daily assignments will be given in correlation with the class discussion. It is expected for a successful student to complete the assignment as soon as possible and in class.

Writing Assignments: A writing assignment based on a biology topic will be assigned each nine week grading period.

Quizzes: Most quizzes will be announced but I reserve the right to change this policy at my discretion.

Notebooks: Notebooks will be checked at my discretion. I expect all papers to be in order.

Lab: A student will answer questions, collect data, and record observations during experiments. Missed labs will either be made up at a later date or an alternate assignment will be given.

Behavioral Expectations:

  1. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

  2. Be prepared for class (textbook, notebook, pen/pencil, homework, etc.).

  3. Electronic devices should only be used BETWEEN classes.

  4. Snacks and drinks are allowed unless we are doing a lab.

  5. Make up work should be completed as soon as possible. You are responsible for picking up any work missed, and then checking with me for additional instructions.

6) Points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late.

7) If you are tardy and must go to in school suspension, you are responsible for your daily assignment as well as extra work that I will provide. There is no good way to make up for lost class time.

8) Be prepared to learn like crazy and have fun!

Requirements:

  1. Participation is expected.

  2. Folder, spiral notebook or binder to keep journals and work

  3. Pens/pencils

  4. A $5 lab fee used for chemicals, slides, specimens

  5. Calculator-nothing fancy

I have read and understand the rules and syllabus. I know that once this paper is signed and turned in, I will receive a 100 for a daily grade. I understand that Mrs. Beeler can modify the rules and syllabus at any time.
